“Future of Fuels”
May 2010
Reflecting over twelve months of extensive research and nearly 500 interviews with industry, technical, academic, and policy experts, Future of Fuels illustrates how different political, market, technological, and economic developments would influence the energy mix, and considers the impact of potential “x-factors” such as energy prices, geopolitical instability, and market volatility. Using an integrated approach, the analysis shows how the development in one area of technology or policy can have impacts that cascade across others. Using four distinct scenarios, Future of Fuels projects global and regional demand for every fuel source – from coal, oil, and natural gas to nuclear and renewables – and explores their interaction with the electric grid, batteries, and water.

“Intellectual Property Protection and Green Growth”
September 2009
Prepared for the Global Intellectual Property Center, “Intellectual Property Protection and Green Growth” provides groundbreaking insight on the green intellectual property market and its role in international climate negotiations. Through multi-scenario analyses and quantitative research, GR assesses the impact of the inclusion of green technology compulsory licensing in international climate agreements, finding that such inclusion could cost the US approximately 1 million jobs and would not significantly accelerate the uptake of green energy technologies in developing countries.
"A Blueprint for Green Energy in the Americas 2009"
2009
"A Blueprint for Green Energy in the Americas 2009” concludes that while enormous opportunities exist for Latin America and the Caribbean to develop its unique comparative advantages in the areas of bio-fuels, renewable energy and carbon finance, an alarming trend has developed suggesting that the region is falling behind much of the rest of the world in these areas that have the potential to contribute greatly to the region’s growth and its recovery from the current crisis.
The nearly 900 page report was prepared in consultation with over 300 experts from around the world including top government officials, scientists, technologists, business leaders and investors. The successor to Garten Rothkopf’s 2007 “Blueprint for Green Energy in the Americas,” also prepared for the IDB, the report was commissioned to assist with planning efforts associated with the IDB’s Sustainable Energy and Climate Change Initiative (SECCI), cited by bank president Luis Alberto Moreno as one of the institution’s top priorities.

2007
This study, prepared by Garten Rothkopf for the Inter American Development Bank, seeks to cut through the hype surrounding bio-fuels, and alternative energy writ large, and present an objective, fact-based analysis of the region’s global competitive position looking forward to 2020. The report, hailed by a review in Foreign Affairs as “a priceless must-read” that “masterfully amasses the most extensive survey of the ethanol and biodiesel markets available today”, includes the most extensive study done to date on the global bio-fuels market, including 50 countries. The report also focuses on the challenges that lie ahead, from ensuring that the choices made are sustainable in terms of their environmental and social impact to recognizing that unprecedented investment and innovation will produce new competitive forces that will require all who would lead to adapt or fall behind.
